What to do with multiple planners? Create a doodle planner!

Way back during Black Friday, I took advantage of the sale Michael's had going on where their planners were on sale.  Both the Recollections brand and the Happy Planner brand.  Even though I already had a personal planner for 2017 and only needed one planner for work for 2017, I ended up buying two extra planners that day.  One I have since given to my niece as it did not end up suiting me and she needed a new planner, and this gorgeous Unicorn covered planner.  I had no idea what I was originally going to do with this planner, but ultimately decided that it would be perfect for doodling!

If you've following me for awhile, you'll have noticed that I haven't drawn much of anything in ages.  Maybe a doodle either or there, but nothing much.  I've barely even touched my Wacom tablet in ages on my computer.  I'm hoping to eventually try to save up to get the Ipad Pro to remedy this, however for doodling, I decided this would be the best option.  Something I can keep track of and post everyday and know when I miss a day.  For 2016 I tried the Year of the Doodle book, which you can see me talk about here.  While I absolutely loved the look of this book, I found that it did not work for me in the way that I wanted.  It comes undated, which normally would suit me well, but actually worked against me.  I couldn't remember what day I was on and forgot to check on it daily.  I would also work ahead and then get behind constantly.  It also had a basic glue bound spine where as I tend to work better with spiral or loose leaf pages.  It also had prompts on several dates, though not all, that ended up crippling my creativity rather than helping it.

You only learn by doing though, so while I did end up finishing it, it was not fully filled nor completed in the way I wanted.  I still love how it turned out overall, since it served as a sort of record keeping book more than a doodle book, it simply did not inspire me the way I had hoped.  Which is not to say that this book will not inspire you if you wish to try it yourself!  I just realized that it didn't work for me in the way I wanted.  I debated even starting another yearly project, since I never handle them verywell.  For whatever reason that process just doesn't seem to work for me.  It took me trying it repeatedly for years to finally admit that while I love the idea and wish I could do it myself, it's just not going to happen, or I didn't think so anyway.

Surprisingly this has been one type that seems to be working.  I've only been keeping this book for a month and a half and I do have to say, I've already learned a lot about myself.  I feel like this has been helping me to create and figure out the type of style I really like and could call my own.  Or at least find my way to it.

Keeping this style of planner as a daily doodle sketchbook also keeps me from jumping ahead or falling behind because I do carry it with me as much as possible and it's already dated so I don't have to try to figure out what day or month I'm on.  I will say I do wish I had gotten a Happy Planner instead as I believe that style of planner would have suited me better.  If I do this again in 2018, I will definitely go that route!

Overall it's been a decent doodle planner and I do enjoy using it.  The colors are soft and not overwhelming, so far at least, that I feel too distracted when drawing.  I do find the bottom of the page is a bit wasted on me, but for planning it would probably come in quite useful for notes or lists.  The pages are fairly thick and good quality and I haven't had any bleed through on the few markers, inks pads, and pens I have used in it.
I can't wait to see the finished book at the end of the year. I posted a couple of quick videos of the flip through on Instagram and it really makes me happy to see all the pages full of doodles.  The colorful washi at the bottom even makes the pages look more fun and bright once everything is completed.

I did originally put in the dates for some birthdays in the month of January,  which I've decided against doing in any future months.  I do like the way the pages look with that little bit of color.  The last few weeks I've gotten away from really using much color but that's something I would really like to incorporate somehow into this book.  Not overwhelmingly, just a little bit though.

I hope you enjoyed seeing and hearing about my doodle planner so far!

Pocket Letters and new supplies

A quick update on some cool new pocket letter/planer goodies I've come across lately as well as a couple of pocket letters I've sent out.
My mom found these awesome box kits on sale and while they're actually for Christmas, they make perfect Valentine boxes as well!
Found these adorable drink and pastry paper sticky note set at the dollar tree!  They all come in a pack together and while the bigger two are just note pads, the little donut hole is a sticky note pad!
Found these awesome trio set of notebooks at the dollar tree as well.  They are lined, unlined and graph papers.  I decided to use the zebra one as my new Listers Gotta List booklet.

These are probably the cutest set of buttons I have ever seen.  I absolutely love them and bought a set for myself as well as to send out in my pocket letters.
A sample of awesome goodies to play with that I bought from scrapbook.com.  I love the Lawn Fawn stamp set.  They're very high quality and super adorable!
Here's a sneak peek at the two pocket letters I've sent out this year for January.

This is my latest work in progress mixed media / valentines day pocket letter.  Haven't found anyone to send it to so far but hopefully will soon.  ;)

A house, some sketches and other doodles

The title really says it all.  Some practice in my latest style of a cute little house, some sketches of random things to try to get all this rustiness out, and some random doodles for more practice.
I've had a hard time with this style, trying to recreate the look I want, but the more I play with it, the easier it has seemed to get.

More vectors

This piece started out as something completely different and somehow morphed into this.  I even started creating an extremely stupid, very silly story to go with it as I kept going with it.  Apologies if none of it makes any sense.  I really enjoyed working on this though, the picture part at least.  ;)  It's rare I ever pull together an entire piece like this, with a background and everything.

Another practice piece in this simple style.  Care for a cup of tea? :)  Be careful, the cups are ticklish.  ;D

Activity Sheets / layouts

I took a little time this weekend to try to get back into my creative groove and ended up creating a couple of 11 x 17 activity layout pages.  Some of the items I had already created and some were new.  I really enjoyed putting them together (although they're not quite complete).  It was fun trying to think of how to put the pages together and to find something fun to put on them, although I feel like I was being too repetitive on some things.  Still, I really liked how they turned out.  I wouldn't mind making an entire book of pages like this.  :)

Smash book - updated

Sometime ago, when I got my first Smash Book (the green one pictured here) by K & Company, I started adding in as many things in as many ways as I could that inspired me, which is what the Smash Book series were originally created for as far as I can tell.  Because this book can be whatever I want it to be, it doesn't matter how messy or pretty or ugly or whatever each page turns out.  And while I try to keep mine as nice and inspirational as I can, they don't always end up as something pretty to look at.  Regardless, I've found they are great for keeping inspiration at your fingertips and have even been debating on creating one (the pink one) into a planner of sorts.  But that will be another post.  The black Smash Book is for my Halloween, Thanksgiving and fall related items, as that is my favorite time of the year and is the most inspirational to me.  I went through and pulled out just a few of the pages or elements I've added in so far to share with you guys since my last post.  (Sorry for any repeat pages.  These are at least better quality then the ones before so you should be able to actually see them this time.)  Hope you guys enjoy!

Most of the pages are compiled of stickers I've collected, pictures I've printed or found or random other things I simply liked and wanted to keep.

I really love my kawaii / cute sticker pages.  Can you see the bright pink fishy stamp I handcarved in there, too?

I haven't put a lot of my own art in this book, but I will occasionally add a few things in, such as the partial flower picture above and the lettering shown.

I also created what's shown on these two pages.  The girl and her pet dog were hand cut and crafted from paper while the lettering was doodled on some old paper, then cute out and added in.  The black and white photo of the girl standing on a head was doodled on sticker paper with permanent markers.

I love adding in as much as I can to this book, especially anything colorful and bright.

These pages below are from my latest book about autumn and fall, specifically Halloween so far.
